to mark the lanscape, starkly
Clients in Denver, CO have commissioned a related series of two charcoal drawings on paper in response to seeing my works on paper. Devon Colson offered some words about the dark marks, the untitled maps: "... there is something stark yet realized, solidified in their structure. Beautiful balance. It's like an unfocused view of something more. Sparks the imagination, like most of her work. There is strong form and asymmetrical balance in the pieces yet there is freedom in the shapes as well. They invoke stark beautiful landscapes to me."

the logic of division
i've begun a new series of paintings - each measuring 30" x 40". will post images to the website with details soon. until then, here's one called "the logic of division" - painted and titled in response to former US President Jimmy Carter's words these days about his book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.

fail better*
so as usual, i'm finding my way through a lively studio practice. working on a new larger series of pieces. something is cooking for sure. what's going on here? what will it taste like? what will you see? i'll post some working images soon.
sometimes after making marks all day, it seems like there's a breakthrough --- a new shape emerges, a new color, or something familiar just looks different --- and then later, it doesn't hold up as a whole. and so... i keep making marks.
*deep thanks to artist Troy Passey, for making beautiful, dark marks on paper. and especially his piece "Fail Better".

it was like this
some new pictures up on the site. and a continuation of experiments with titles. i wonder what you think. and so, some of these pieces use lots of water, thinning the the acrylic medium that holds the pigment, building layer upon layer. and: they're smaller scale canvases. easy to ship.

Abstract Art in a Landscape State
Many thanks to the staff of CornerHouse Gallery for a terrific, well-attended Fall Show opening last week. All-jazz radio station KCCK-88.3 out of Cedar Rapids, IA hosted an interview with artist Nancy Lindsey and me. No word yet on a digital recording available online, but i'll keep you posted. The interview -- and the show's opening reception -- offered futher opportunity to talk about so-called Abstract Painting, especially in relationship to the immensely popular Iowa Landscape Painting. Fascinating! More stories soon from the ongoing conversation.
